In early 20th-century England, Paul Morel, a young man with artistic aspirations, lives in a close-knit coal-mining community. His emotionally manipulative mother, Mrs. Morel, exerts a stifling influence over him, complicating his relationships with two women: Miriam Leivers, his childhood friend, and Clara Dawes, a liberated woman separated from her husband. Paul's struggle to balance his artistic ambitions with his mother's expectations and his romantic entanglements forms the crux of the story.
